Janie Wallace is excellent in making the transition from insecure Louise to the sophisticated and calculating Gypsy Rose Lee. Her success is especially noteworthy because her important striptease number that shows her transition from wallflower to a rose in full bloom is staged so unimaginatively it is actually dull. But don't worry, three other chaste strippers (Megan Rosenblatt, Debora Avila and Karen Kolterman) compensate with the fun number "You Gotta Have a Gimmick."
a sad situation to the level of heartbreak rather than a good singer who refuses to recognize the woman's flaws.
"Gypsy" is a story about the stage mother from hell. It's especially compelling because it is based on truth as the children performers who are pushed to excess by Momma Rose eventually became stars. Baby June gained fame as stage and film actress June Havoc and her sister, Louise, became the notorious Gypsy Rose Lee, the woman, who in the 1940s put the tease in striptease.
That said, Timpanaro Hogan offers a gutsy performance as she creates a woman you like and care about. Though she doesn't find the manic energy in Rose's show stopping numbers ("Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn") she does use her cabaret skills to sell her songs to make them seem meaningful and Adidas Football Shoes Names
proof there's no bad production
Clearly this places great demands on the actress playing Rose. At Cohoes, she's played by Nancy Timpanaro Hogan, an engaging performer with the unique gift of being able to immediately endear herself to an audience. Unfortunately this gift gets in her way as Rose is not a person who is lovable. Rose demands a strong dramatic actress who can elevate Adidas Gloro Red
Beth Kuhn is a talented and vibrant June, and as Rose's love interest, Herbie, played by Jerry Christakos offers yet another solid portrayal of a guy with a good heart.
"Gypsy" has one of the best scores ever written for musical theater. Jule Adidas Ace 17 Styne's music always evokes emotion as it either makes you smile or brings you to tears. Thanks to Stephen Sondheim's lyrics the songs offer wit, drama and personal insight. Arthur Laurent's book always works in perfect harmony with the music.
Despite its many problems there are many things to appreciate in this production especially in the second act when Rivera's direction and Timpanaro Hogan's performance find a focus. The music becomes more meaningful and the emotions become less superficial.
However, what elevates "Gypsy" to the ranks of great musical theater is the central character Rose. The obsessive domineering woman runs a gamut of emotions finally ending as a near tragic figure ignored by her children to whom she devoted her life. She is a person who is difficult to love, yet impossible to hate.
This is a very large cast with well over two dozen performers most of whom seem under rehearsed. The early song and dance numbers are cute as the talented youngsters in the cast show how difficult it was for Rose's troupe of kids to look good when forced to use overblown and sappy material. Unfortunately the cheap production values of the show diminish the fun of the numbers and add an unnecessary aura of amateurism to a production that bills itself as one offering professional entertainment.
Indeed, the technical support is flimsy throughout. Sets tend to be tacky, costumes are unflattering and the orchestra led by Joshua Zecher Ross Puma King Cleats
often seems to be referencing a show different from the one the performers are singing. Tony Rivera's erratic direction results in a clunky overly long first act.
