Admission to the performance is free to students. Tickets for all others are $18 per person. Additional information may be obtained from Cantor Buch at 909 626 1277. The celebration reminds participants and performers that, despite obstacles, Jewish life and culture have persevered, survived and thrived, said Buch, one of the program coordinators. It also raises awareness about the deep cultural ties between the Jews of Spanish descent and the people of Latin America because many of the expelled Spanish Jews relocated to the New World's South, Central and North America into areas conquered by Spain, he added. These areas included Mexico, the southwestern United States and Latin America. "Jews, Muslims and Christians lived and worked together peacefully for centuries in Spain before the expulsion order was issued on July 30, 1492," Buch noted. "The period prior to the expulsion was called the Golden Age of Spain because it was a time of mutual respect, shared vision and sense of community. "This event is titled La Convivencia,' the name given to describe the era in Spanish history from 711 to 1492 when Jews, Muslims and Catholics lived in peace together. La Convivencia,' from the Spanish word for co existence, celebrates the interplay of cultural ideas and tolerance between the three great western religious traditions," Buch explained. The Colombia born Paloma, a Fulbright scholar and musical artist now living in Morocco, "has spent years uncovering the metaphoric meaning of ancient texts that are embedded in the collective memory of the Jewish community there," according to Buch. "Morocco is the only country in the world where the chain of transmission from the Spanish Golden Age has not been broken by migration or political upheaval," the cantor continued. "It carries the remnants of La Convivencia' of Christians, Jews and Muslims and this is clearly seen in its musical traditions." Paloma specializes in Sephardic women's songs and their connection to women's spiritual expressions.
